“If you’re a white, working class boy, you’re less likely than anybody else in Britain to go to university”: the words of Theresa May in her first speech as Prime Minister.
It’s something that the universities across Birmingham have been well aware of and have been working hard to address.
As part of their Aim Higher initiative, they wanted a video that would appeal to this demographic, that could be easily shared and discovered on social media and would show, rather than tell, that university is a place for working class males as much as it is for anyone else. The end goal being an inspirational piece that encourages individuals not to place limitations on what they can achieve.
A two day, multi-location shoot, including a scene in Monarch’s aircraft hangar, this one was a lot of fun to shoot. We used all local, Birmingham talent, a lot of them students at the universities themselves.
Aim Higher West Midlands is a partnership of universities, colleges and schools that work together to ensure young people from less advantaged backgrounds have access to high quality, exciting and challenging experiences that enhance their careers education, motivate, inspire and provide accurate and impartial information, advice and guidance about higher education.
